Video Summary

Welcome back! Today I’m sharing a fill-in grocery haul where I focus on buying items that are on sale. I don’t do standard weekly or monthly grocery shopping trips – instead, I buy when things are on sale and keep enough stocked up until they go on sale again, which saves me a ton of money. For my family of two, we typically spend about $300 a month on food by shopping this way. In this haul, I picked up 15 pounds of ground beef (at $3.97/pound instead of the usual $6.99-$8), five packs of hot dogs, two packs of bacon, two packages of ham, eggs, bananas, whipped cream, and four bags of chips – all for $101.06, saving $68.43 (40% off my order!). I explain how to know if something is a good deal by tracking prices at multiple stores over time and watching items for months to learn their price patterns. For example, I know ground beef at my local King Soopers goes on sale for $3.97 every few months, so I stock up then. The only items I bought that weren’t on sale were bananas, whipped cream, and eggs (which are expensive right now at $5.19 for 18). I’ll freeze all the meat to have on hand whenever I need it, and this will restock my freezer after making freezer meals. I know not everyone can buy in bulk like this, but even buying one extra item when it’s on sale instead of at full price later will really help your budget!

Welcome back. I’m Kari and this is Keep It Simple DIY. Today I have a fill-in grocery haul for you. I like to do fill-in grocery hauls occasionally, and I don’t actually have a weekly or a monthly standard grocery shopping trip. I like to buy when things are on sale, and I make sure that I keep enough stocked up so that I have enough until the items go on sale again. And by doing that, I actually save a ton of money, which is super helpful.

For my family of two, we typically spend about $300 a month on average for food, and the way that I do that is by shopping sales. So today I just did a little pickup haul, so I would be able to… So today I just did a little grocery shopping trip based on what was on sale. And so if you are wondering how much all this costs, I know you are, I will tell you at the end. But leave a comment down below. How much do you think all of this costs?

What I have is 15 pounds of ground beef, five packs of hot dogs, two packs of bacon, two things of ham, eggs, bananas, whipped cream, and then four bags of chips. How much do you think it costs? Comment down below.

So I want to talk about shopping while on sale and how to know if something is a good deal. Knowing if it’s a good deal takes a little bit of research. You need to shop around at multiple stores and watch these items for a while. You don’t want to look at just one point in time. Over the course of months, how much do certain items end up being?

And so for example, the ground beef. Ground beef can be, you know, seven, eight dollars a pound, especially at the 93/7, which is what I purchased today. And I know that at my local King Soopers, which is just Kroger, it goes on sale for $3.97 a pound every few months. And so what I like to do is make sure that I stock up when those sales come, and I make sure that I’m not overusing before the sale comes. If I do, we just eat something different. $3.97 is a great deal.

Now I can get ground beef for a cheaper price at Sam’s Club, but I’ve noticed the quality isn’t as great. So that’s also something that I’m looking for in foods. Sometimes I don’t mind if things are not organic. I just go with whatever is the cheapest as long as it has a decent quality.

So let’s look. Ground beef originally is $6.99, so I got 15 pounds at $3.97. I have saved a ton of money on that. And then if I look down on my list, the hot dogs. I don’t eat that many hot dogs, but you know, I do like a good mac and cheese with hot dogs in it or a hot dog in the summertime. And so those were a dollar each. They’re originally, I think, $1.39. Yeah, $1.39 each, on sale for a dollar each. So these were all on sale. I got five because it was save a dollar, or because they were a dollar each if you bought five.

Bacon and ham, I like to use those for breakfast burritos and such. We don’t typically eat a lot of sandwiches, but occasionally we will in the summer. They were both on sale as well. The ham was on sale for $3.50 and it’s originally $5.50, so that was a good deal. And then the bacon was, let’s see, it was two dollars off. So originally $5.99, I got it for $3.99.

So you’ll notice the majority of everything that I bought is on sale. Chips were on sale too. Chips are something we typically don’t have in our house other than occasionally I’ll have like a tortilla chip. But when they go on sale, sometimes I’ll stock up. And these were on sale. I’m not paying, you know, six dollars for a bag of potato chips. They’re not healthy for your wallet or your body.

So let’s see, these were $3.49 per bag. They were two dollars off. Two dollars off, $4, $2, $1.30. They were a dollar thirty off or two dollars off. The receipt’s a little confusing. So these were on sale as well.

The only items I got that were not on sale were bananas, whipped cream, and eggs. And I did buy store brand whipped cream, which is like a dollar. Bananas were 69 cents a pound. And the eggs, we all know eggs are where the money is. They were $5.19 right now, which is definitely more than I’d want to pay for eggs because I used to be able to get that 60-count from Walmart for seven dollars. And to only get 18 for, you know, five dollars and some change is not fantastic. So those were definitely kind of the high ticket item.

So what I’m going to do with this is I’m going to freeze everything that is a meat, and I will have those in my freezer for time to come whenever I need it. And for the other items, fresh eating, and we’ll save the chips for a little bit here and there.

All right, so drum roll please. The amount that I saved on my order is 40%, and the only thing I did for a coupon was I picked the coupon for the chips, and all I had to do was scan the QR code when I got in the store and click the button and I got it. Everything else was just me shopping the sale. So I got 40% off my order by shopping the sale, and my total was $101 and six cents.

So all of this for a hundred bucks. Can you believe that? This, if I were going to the store to buy the ingredients to make dinner, I would spend a hundred dollars in just a few days and then I’d have to keep doing that. And in this case, I mean, let’s say I bought a packet of beef, seven dollars. That’s crazy. Even if I bought like a less lean one, I mean all that happens then is you cook out some of the meat. I mean, it’s more flavorful, but if you cook out the fat, you don’t have as much meat. So it just gets super expensive if you’re not shopping sales.

So the total that I saved was $68 and 43 cents. I could do a lot with $68.43. Heck, I could buy almost this whole thing again.

So I know that not everyone can just go and buy a ton of items at once. A hundred dollars, if you need to go out and buy just, you know, your items for the week, sometimes you just have to buy the items at full price. But if there’s any chance that you can, it’s great to be able to buy one for now and two for later, or one for now and one for later. Or in my case, I’m buying 15 for later. Anything you can do to buy the item when it’s on sale and not have to buy the item when it’s not on sale will really help your budget.

So that’s my little haul. I actually decided to do this because I did see ground beef was on sale, but I also wanted to restock my freezer meals. And so I will be using the ground beef that I had in my freezer, and I don’t have any left after taking meat out for those freezer meals. So we’re stocking back up, stocking up on kind of our summery meat treats and summer chip treats too. We’re feeling summer over here. I’m hoping it’ll be here soon, right?

Anyways, thank you so much for joining me in this grocery haul. I hope you enjoyed it. I hope that you participate in buying when things are on sale because it’s just so much cheaper. If you liked this video, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe. I would greatly appreciate that. It really helps my channel, and I will see you next time. Bye!
